Professional football in France was not established until 1932, following a 1930 vote by the French Football Federation. The inaugural season of the league, which was then known as National, commenced in 1932 and finished in 1933, with 20 clubs competing in two groups of 10. Within each group of 10, the three teams who placed last were then relegated to Division 2. The winning team of each group faced each other in a final match to determine the overall winner. In the first ever final the winners of Group B, Antibes, did not play as they were suspended due to suspicions of bribery.
Group A winners Olympique Lillois won with a final score of four goals to three against Cannes, the Group B runners-up. At the end of this first season, the decision was made not to promote new teams from Division 2 but to maintain a 14-team Division 1. This number increased gradually over the years but would not return to the full complement of 20 teams until the 1965-66 season. The infographic attachment looks at goal scoring records throughout the entire history of Ligue 1 since 1932.
The competition format of Ligue 1 today works in the same way as the UK’s Premier League. Each team plays all other teams in the league twice in a season running from August to May, with one home game and one away game for each team. Teams are initially ranked by points, earning three points for a winning result and one point each if the game is a draw. Where two or more teams have an equal number of points, they are then ranked by goal difference.
If points and goal difference are equal, the team with the most goals scored in total ranks highest. In rare cases where all three factors are equal and the involved teams are up for winning the championship, being relegated to Ligue 2 or competing for entry into another football competition, they play a single match at a neutral venue to determine the winner. The three teams which end the season at the bottom of Ligue 1 are relegated, replaced by the three highest ranking teams from Ligue 2.
